Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has reportedly acquired a new Gulfstream G500 aircraft valued at approximately Rs 10 billion. The jet, which is registered in the United States under the tail number N144S, is said to be part of the broader plan to operationalize Punjab Airlines.
The provincial government is preparing to launch the airline’s inaugural flight in April, marking a significant step toward establishing its own aviation operations. In the first phase, the airline aims to induct seven aircraft into its fleet, with officials describing the initiative as a long-term investment in improving regional air connectivity and boosting the province’s aviation sector.
The development has triggered mixed reactions, particularly on social media, where critics have questioned the necessity of such an expensive purchase at a time when many citizens are grappling with economic challenges. Opponents argue that public funds could be better utilized in sectors such as healthcare, education, and public welfare.
In response to the criticism, Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari defended the government’s decision, clarifying that the airline’s fleet strategy includes a mix of aircraft types, with some planes to be acquired through leasing arrangements rather than outright purchases. She emphasized that the move is part of a structured and forward-looking aviation plan designed to strengthen infrastructure and expand travel options within and beyond the province, dismissing the backlash as politically motivated.
