Punjab government has decided to switch all 43 prisons in the province to solar energy to reduce electricity costs. This move is expected to save a significant amount of money and make the prison system more energy-efficient.

The home department has completed a detailed plan and sent it to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for approval. Once approved, the project will begin in phases.

A survey conducted by the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) estimated that the total cost of installing solar power in all prisons would be around Rs 4.35 billion. This amount is less than the current annual electricity and gas expenses of Rs 4.5 billion, making it a cost-effective decision.

By switching to solar power, the government expects to cut electricity costs by up to 60 percent. Experts believe that the initial investment will be recovered within just three years due to the savings in energy bills.

The project will not only help reduce costs but also promote clean and renewable energy. Solar power will provide a reliable electricity supply, ensuring that prisons continue to function smoothly without interruptions.

If approved, Punjab will take a big step toward energy independence and sustainability. This initiative could also encourage other government departments to adopt solar energy, leading to long-term benefits for the province.
