The Punjab Communication and Works Department has launched groundwork for a massive infrastructure development plan in Rawalpindi, estimated to cost Rs. 6.6 billion. The initiative aims to tackle the city’s chronic traffic congestion and improve road connectivity for commuters.
The project includes the construction of flyovers and underpasses at key locations such as Kutchery Chowk, Jinnah Park, and Iftikhar Janjua Underpass.
These developments are expected to streamline traffic flow, reduce travel time, and enhance safety for daily travelers. Officials have confirmed that construction work is scheduled to begin in early November, pending final clearance from garrison authorities.
In addition to these major projects, the government also plans to construct new underpasses at Race Course Park, Army Graveyard Square, and Chairing Cross on Peshawar Road. Once completed, the entire route from Ammar Chowk to the motorway will become signal-free, significantly easing movement for thousands of vehicles each day.
Work on service roads and drainage systems has already commenced as part of the preliminary phase. These upgrades are designed to improve not just traffic flow but also urban resilience against rainwater accumulation and flooding.
The initiative reflects the Punjab government’s broader vision of modernizing urban infrastructure across major cities.
By investing in sustainable mobility and efficient transport systems, Rawalpindi is set to see a major transformation, turning it into a more accessible, connected, and commuter-friendly city in the coming years.
