Russia Becomes First Country to Recognize Taliban Govt
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterWhatsapp

Russia has officially recognized the Taliban government in Afghanistan, becoming the first major global power to do so. This move marks a significant shift in international politics, as most countries have not yet formally accepted the Taliban as the legitimate rulers of Afghanistan since they took control in August 2021.

Russia’s recognition means that it now sees the Taliban government as the official authority in Afghanistan. This decision could open the door to stronger political and economic ties between the two countries. It may also influence how other countries respond to the Taliban government in the future.

The Taliban returned to power nearly three years ago, following the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops. Since then, Afghanistan has faced many challenges, including a struggling economy, limited international support, and ongoing concerns about human rights—especially women’s rights and freedom of expression.

While some neighboring countries have engaged with the Taliban on various levels, they have stopped short of full recognition. Russia’s decision could encourage others to reconsider their position, especially in the region.

According to Russian officials, the move is aimed at promoting stability and cooperation. However, critics argue that recognizing the Taliban may weaken pressure on them to improve human rights and form an inclusive government.

Still, this step by Russia shows a clear change in international relations and may reshape future diplomacy with Afghanistan. It remains to be seen how other countries will respond to Russia’s decision and whether it will lead to wider acceptance of the Taliban government.
