Pakistan is preparing to introduce a new policy that will allow citizens to purchase smartphones through instalment plans, a step aimed at expanding digital access and making modern technology more affordable for people across the country. IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja shared that the initiative is designed to help individuals from different economic backgrounds own smart devices, which have become essential for communication, education, online services, and participation in the digital economy.

The minister noted that the government is also focusing on strengthening the local technology ecosystem. A growing number of smartphones are now being assembled within Pakistan, which is helping reduce costs, support local manufacturing, and create employment opportunities. Increased local production is expected to make devices more accessible while also supporting the country’s broader economic development.

Pakistan’s internet connectivity is also set to improve with the addition of three new submarine internet cables. These cables will significantly enhance international bandwidth, improving internet speed and reliability across the country. The upgrade is intended to support the rising demand for digital services as more citizens come online.

In another major development, the government recently released 480 MHz of telecom spectrum, effectively tripling network capacity. This move is expected to strengthen mobile networks and prepare the telecommunications sector for the introduction of 5G technology, with pilot launches planned in major cities in the near future.

The government is also planning to establish a national AI Council that will help guide technology policy and promote the responsible development of artificial intelligence in Pakistan. The council is expected to support innovation, attract investment in emerging technologies, and contribute to the growth of the country’s digital economy.

These initiatives together reflect a broader effort to expand digital inclusion, improve connectivity, and ensure that more people across Pakistan can benefit from technological advancements.
