South Korea Reveals World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Apartment Complex With Over 400 Houses

The world’s first “hydrogen apartment” block has been introduced in Ulsan, South Korea. The Yuldong-With-U complex, consisting of 437 households, is entirely powered by hydrogen fuel cells for both heat and electricity.

The innovative system has been operational for a month, and the city of Ulsan is set to decide on the pricing for the heat and power generated by hydrogen. In June alone, the apartments produced 840 MWh of power. In terms of conventional utility costs, this would amount to 150 million won (approximately $108,286).

The Yuldong-With-U apartments are powered by the nearby Yuldong Combined Heat and Power Plant, located just 200 meters from the complex. This plant utilizes hydrogen, a byproduct from local industries, which is transported via a 10 km pipeline.

The hydrogen-powered system is noted for its cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. The plant uses three container-sized fuel cells situated on the apartment complex’s rooftop, generating 1.31 megawatts of electricity from 51 kilograms of hydrogen per hour.

This output is sufficient to power four-person households with a month’s worth of electricity every hour.

In addition to electricity, the process also produces heat, which is captured and stored in a thermal accumulator with a 40-ton capacity. The stored heat is used to warm water to temperatures up to 70°C, which is then piped directly into the homes, providing efficient heating solutions.

The Yuldong-With-U complex stands as a testament to the potential of hydrogen fuel cells in residential applications. By harnessing this technology, the development not only reduces environmental impact but also offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional energy sources.

This pioneering project in Ulsan highlights the future of sustainable urban living, setting a new standard for energy-efficient housing worldwide.
