The Government of Japan has opened applications for the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship Programme 2026, offering fully funded opportunities for international students to pursue higher education at Japanese universities. The scholarship is funded by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and is considered one of the most prestigious international scholarship programs available for students worldwide.

The program provides financial support for students pursuing undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and specialized training programs in Japan. Selected applicants receive full tuition coverage, a monthly stipend to cover living expenses, and round‑trip airfare between their home country and Japan. The scholarship also includes accommodation support and access to academic and research facilities at participating universities.

Under the scholarship benefits, undergraduate students receive a monthly allowance of around ¥117,000, while master’s and doctoral students receive higher stipends ranging from approximately ¥144,000 to ¥145,000 depending on the program. In certain designated regions of Japan, scholars may also receive an additional monthly allowance to help with living costs. Tuition fees, admission charges, and entrance examination fees are fully covered under the program.

The scholarship also provides travel support in the form of an economy‑class round‑trip airline ticket between the recipient’s home country and Japan. In many cases, selected undergraduate students are required to complete a preparatory year that includes intensive Japanese language training and foundational academic courses before beginning their degree programs.

Applicants must be citizens of countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Japan and must meet specific academic and age requirements depending on the program level. For undergraduate applicants, candidates typically must have completed 12 years of formal education and meet the specified age criteria set by the program. Applicants are also required to be in good physical and mental health and must demonstrate a strong interest in studying in Japan.

The duration of the scholarship varies depending on the program. Undergraduate programs generally last four to five years, while master’s programs typically take two to three years and doctoral programs usually run for three to four years. During this time, students gain access to Japan’s advanced research facilities and academic resources across a wide range of fields, including engineering, social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and technology.

Applications are usually submitted through Japanese embassies or consulates in applicants’ home countries, or through university recommendations depending on the program track. Shortlisted candidates may be required to undergo written examinations and interviews before the final selection process is completed.

The MEXT scholarship has long served as a key initiative by the Japanese government to strengthen international academic collaboration and promote cultural exchange. Each year, thousands of students from around the world apply for the program, making it one of the most competitive and sought‑after scholarships for those wishing to study in Japan.
