Must-visit sites for history, nature and local cuisine

Planning a road trip into interior Sindh? Beyond the bustling energy of Karachi lies a region rich with history, culture, and natural beauty. From serene lakes to ancient ruins, Sindh has plenty of hidden gems waiting to be explored. Here are 5 places to stop by on your next journey into the heart of Sindh.

1. Keenjhar Lake

One of the largest freshwater lakes in Pakistan, Keenjhar is a peaceful escape just a couple of hours from Karachi. Locals love it for boating, fishing, and weekend picnics, while birdwatchers come for sightings of migratory species. You can even take a boat ride to explore its calm waters more closely.

2. Makli Necropolis

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the world’s largest cemeteries, stretching across miles of intricately carved tombs and mausoleums. Walking through Makli feels like stepping into a living museum of Sindh’s architectural and cultural history. The site also includes the final resting places of rulers, nobles, and governors from dynasties such as the Samma, Arghun, Tarkhan, and Mughal periods.

3. Bhambore

An ancient port city near Thatta, Bhambore dates back to the 1st century BC. Archaeological excavations have uncovered remnants of temples, mosques, and fortifications, giving insight into centuries of trade and settlement. Some historians suggest Bhambore may have been the site of Debal, the city where Muhammad bin Qasim first entered Sindh.

4. Café Imran

No road trip is complete without grabbing a bite to eat. A well-known stop for travelers, Café Imran serves rich, flavourful dishes and steaming cups of chai. What sets it apart is that much of its meat, dairy, and vegetables are sourced organically from its own farms, giving the food a fresher, more authentic taste compared to typical highway cafés.

5. Haleji Lake

Once Asia’s largest bird sanctuary, Haleji is a paradise for nature lovers. In winter, it hosts thousands of migratory birds from as far as Siberia, making it a dream spot for wildlife photographers and eco-tourists. The lake is also home to crocodiles, adding a wild edge to its calm, scenic surroundings.

Interior Sindh is more than just a stretch of highway, it’s a tapestry of stories, landscapes, and flavors. Whether you’re chasing history, nature, or just a good cup of chai, these five spots promise memories you’ll want to revisit repeatedly.
