The Riyadh Metro, the largest public transport system in the Middle East and the world’s longest driverless train network, officially began operations on December 1. This state-of-the-art metro system spans 176 kilometers and includes 85 stations, making it a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to modernize urban transportation and reduce traffic congestion.

The metro aims to ease traffic in Riyadh by reducing congestion by 30%, offering residents and visitors a fast, efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional transportation. Currently, three of the metro’s six lines are operational, while the remaining three are scheduled to launch by January 2025. Once fully functional, the system will have the capacity to serve 3.6 million passengers every day, significantly transforming the city’s mobility landscape.

To enhance the user experience, the Riyadh Metro has introduced the Darb app, which allows passengers to plan routes, purchase tickets, and receive real-time updates. This smart integration of technology reflects Riyadh’s commitment to creating a seamless and modern public transportation experience.

The $35 billion project is a key component of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative, which focuses on sustainable development and preparing for population growth. The metro system is also designed to support Riyadh’s ambitions to become a global city capable of hosting major international events, such as the World Expo 2030 and FIFA World Cup in 2034.

In addition to addressing immediate transportation needs, the Riyadh Metro represents a long-term investment in sustainable urban living. By reducing reliance on private vehicles and promoting environmentally friendly travel, it aligns with global goals for greener cities. With its extensive reach, innovative design, and capacity to serve millions, the Riyadh Metro is set to become a model for urban mobility in the region and beyond.
