India’s Delhi 88-Year-Old Record Broken as City Sees 228.1 mm Rain in 24 Hours

Delhi experienced a significant rainfall of 228.1 mm in just 24 hours, one of the highest amounts recorded in June. This caused widespread waterlogging throughout the city.

The rainfall at Safdarjung was particularly notable, marking the second-highest amount for June in the past 88 years. More than 150 mm of rain fell between 2:30 am and 5:30 am.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that this is the first time since 1966 that Delhi has seen such heavy rain in a single day. This amount of rainfall represents 25% of the total expected during the monsoon season.

Overflowing drains worsened the situation, leading to severe flooding that affected roads and disrupted traffic across the city. The heavy rain also caused structural damage at Delhi airport’s Terminal 1, resulting in temporary closures.

The IMD has forecasted continued rainfall and gusty winds for the coming week, indicating that the weather conditions may remain challenging for a while longer.
