A recent review has uncovered major irregularities in the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), raising concerns about how public money is being managed.

According to the findings, millions of rupees were reportedly paid to people who were no longer alive, as well as to government officials who were never eligible to receive financial aid in the first place.

BISP was originally designed to provide support to low-income families across Pakistan, helping them meet basic needs and improve their quality of life. However, the review has highlighted serious flaws in the system.

Weak verification methods and lack of proper oversight allowed these payments to go unnoticed for a long time. Instead of reaching struggling families, a large amount of money was misdirected, sparking widespread criticism.

Authorities have now launched investigations to understand how these errors occurred and to determine the true scale of the mismanagement.

The misuse of funds meant for the most vulnerable has raised questions about accountability and the effectiveness of the programme’s current structure.

In response, many voices are calling for stricter monitoring and greater transparency in the distribution process.

Suggestions include introducing stronger digital verification systems to ensure that only eligible families receive assistance, as well as implementing tighter checks and balances at every stage.

The findings serve as a reminder of the importance of proper governance in social welfare programmes. For BISP to truly achieve its purpose, reforms are urgently needed so that financial aid reaches only those who genuinely deserve it, while protecting public funds from misuse.
