Brazil Bans Abuse Of Dogs And Cats With Up to 5 Years in Prison

Brazil has significantly strengthened its legal framework to protect domestic animals, classifying animal cruelty as a serious criminal offense. Under the revised law, individuals found guilty of abusing, injuring, or killing dogs or cats may face two to five years in prison.

In addition to jail terms, the legislation introduces substantial fines and enforces a lifetime ban on owning animals for those convicted. These measures address earlier legal gaps that often allowed offenders to receive minimal penalties or community service instead of harsher punishment.

The reform reflects a broader global shift toward recognizing pets as sentient beings and enforcing stricter laws to safeguard their welfare and safety.
