China has achieved a new milestone in space technology as Sustain Space successfully tested a flexible robotic arm in orbit. The test was carried out aboard the Yuxing-3 06 satellite, which was launched on March 16 using a Kuaizhou-11 rocket.
The robotic arm is designed in a unique way, similar to an elephant’s trunk, allowing it to bend and move easily. This flexibility helps it reach difficult areas and connect with satellites in space. During the test, the arm performed refueling simulations while operating at very high altitudes.
The system used a combination of autonomous controls, ground-based commands, and vision-guided technology to complete its tasks. This means it can work both independently and with human support from Earth, making it highly efficient for space operations.
The project was developed under the leadership of Tsinghua University. The goal of this technology is to support satellites already in orbit by refueling them, repairing them, or extending their working life.
This advancement is important because it reduces the need to replace satellites frequently, saving both time and cost. It also opens the door for more advanced in-space maintenance and servicing in the future.
