Couple gunned down in Karachi’s Sohrab Goth for ‘honour’: police

KARACHI: A young couple was gunned down over ‘honour’ in Karachi’s Sohrab Goth area on Thursday, according to police and rescue services officials.

They stated that a 30-year-old man and his 28-year-old wife were found dead inside a home in Lasi Goth with gunshot wounds.

Sohrab Goth Station House Officer Gul Baig told media that the double murder appeared to be an ‘honour’ killing and said that the victims got married in Larkana district around six months ago.

“They moved to Karachi and were living in a rented house, where the girl’s relatives traced and allegedly shot them dead,” SHO Baig said. “The police called the Crime Scene Unit to collect evidence [and] the bodies were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.”

Meanwhile, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IG) Javed Alam Odho took notice of the double murder in Sohrab Goth, spokesperson Syed Saad Ali said.

“The IG sought details of the incident from the DIG (Deputy Inspector General) East,” Ali said. “He also ordered the immediate arrest of the killers involved in the double murder.”

Last month, a couple who married with mutual consent was allegedly gunned down by the woman’s father in Machar Colony.

Docks police, in a statement, said that the male victim was gunned down while his wife was shot and injured by her father inside a home near Ayesha Masjid in Machar Colony.

In Pakistan, ‘honour’ killings continued to claim the lives of women throughout 2024, perpetuated by deeply ingrained societal beliefs about family dignity and shame.

Data from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) shows that in 2024, ‘honour’ killings continued to be a serious issue across Pakistan, with particularly high figures in Sindh and Punjab. From January to November, a total of 346 people fell victim to ‘honour’ crimes in the country.
