As families across the country celebrate Eid ul-Adha, storing Qurbani meat properly becomes an important task. While many people distribute meat to neighbors and the needy, a large portion is also kept for later use. Food safety experts advise that proper storage in deep freezers is key to maintaining meat quality and preventing health risks.
According to experts, Qurbani meat can be safely stored in a deep freezer for up to six months, provided the temperature remains consistently at -18°C (0°F). However, the earlier the meat is used, the better it will taste and the more nutrients it will retain.
Dr. Farah Khan, a food safety specialist, explained, “Freezing stops the growth of bacteria, but it doesn’t kill them. That’s why proper handling before freezing is equally important. Meat should be cleaned, portioned, and packed in airtight freezer-safe bags or containers.”
Experts also warn against frequent opening of freezers during load shedding or power cuts, as temperature fluctuations can cause meat to spoil. It’s recommended to store smaller portions in separate packets, so only what is needed is defrosted avoiding repeated thawing and refreezing.
For best results, label each packet with the date it was stored. Most importantly, keep the meat away from vegetables and cooked food to prevent cross-contamination.
