Ireland Becomes First European Country to Pass a Law Banning Imports from Isr-ael

Ireland has taken a major step by becoming the first European country to ban the trade and import of goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The decision comes shortly after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an advisory opinion on July 19, 2024, declaring these settlements illegal under international law.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris introduced the new legislation, saying it shows Ireland’s strong support for human rights and the two-state solution. He explained that the goal is not to target Israel as a whole, but to hold illegal settlements accountable under international law.

Once passed, the bill will make it a criminal offense to import products from these settlements under Ireland’s Customs Act 2015. To help enforce the law, the government plans to use settlement postal codes, which are already identified by the European Union, to distinguish between legal and illegal goods.

Harris emphasized that the law is about fairness and responsibility, and he hopes other countries will take similar action. The move is expected to set an example across Europe and beyond.

Ireland’s decision highlights its long-standing support for Palestinian rights and its commitment to following international legal standards. It also adds pressure on other governments to reconsider their trade ties with settlements built in occupied territories.
