The proposed “Friendship Bridge” aims to strengthen relations between Bahrain and Qatar, two countries with a historically complicated past. This initiative is expected to boost economic growth within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and foster closer cultural ties between the nations.

As reported by the News, the Bahrain-Qatar Causeway project, now officially named, will significantly shorten travel time from five hours to just 30 minutes over a span of 21 miles. Originally projected to cost £1.8 billion in 2008, the project’s budget has since increased to nearly £2.4 billion.

The bridge is designed to accommodate both road and railway traffic, extending from the existing King Fahd Causeway, which links Khobar in Saudi Arabia to Al Jasra in Bahrain. It will stand at a height of 40 meters to allow passage for maritime navigation.

Dr. Omar Alubaydli from the Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International, and Energy Studies (Derasat) emphasized the economic and cultural connections between Bahrain and Qatar. He pointed out that their close proximity and vibrant economies position them as natural trading partners.
