Professor Syed Saeed Ashraf, a Pakistan-born cardiothoracic surgeon working at Morriston Hospital in Swansea, has been honoured with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his outstanding contributions to cardiac surgery, training surgeons overseas, and humanitarian efforts. This prestigious recognition highlights his dedication not only to medicine but also to improving healthcare for underserved communities.
Dr Ashraf is widely known for his voluntary work in Pakistan, where he regularly travels to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Karachi to perform complex heart surgeries. He focuses particularly on young patients suffering from rheumatic heart disease and extends his care to Afghan refugees, ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to life-saving treatment. In addition to his surgical work, he actively trains local doctors and surgeons, helping to build specialised cardiac care capabilities in regions that previously had limited access to such services.
Speaking about the award, Dr Ashraf expressed humility, stating that the honour reflects not just his own efforts but also the support and dedication of his family, colleagues, and mentors. He emphasized that recognition like this inspires continued commitment to advancing medical care and supporting communities both in Pakistan and abroad. His work stands as a testament to the impact that skilled and compassionate medical professionals can have on global health.
