Pakistan’s Punjab Becomes First Province in World to implement Sikh Marriage Act

The Punjab cabinet has approved the ‘Punjab Anand Karaj Marriage Registrar Rules 2024’, which officially recognizes and regularizes Sikh marriages. This makes Punjab the first province in the world to implement the Sikh Marriage Act. The decision was made during a meeting in Lahore, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, with provincial ministers and officials in attendance.

This move follows the Punjab Assembly’s 2018 bill aimed at formalizing Sikh marriages. Provincial Minister for Minorities Ramesh Singh Arora expressed his appreciation for the initiative, highlighting its importance for the Sikh community.

Before this, Sikh marriages in India were registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, which did not specifically cater to the unique customs and traditions of Sikh weddings. With the new rules, Sikh couples in Punjab will have their marriages officially recognized according to their own religious practices.

In addition to this significant development for the Sikh community, the Punjab government is also planning to introduce the Hindu Marriage Act, further demonstrating its commitment to recognizing and formalizing the marriages of various religious communities within the province.

This historic step by Punjab not only respects the cultural and religious practices of the Sikh community but also sets a precedent for other regions to follow in ensuring the legal recognition of diverse marriage customs. The approval of these rules is a major stride towards inclusivity and equality for all minority groups in the region.
