The metropolis witnessed heavy rainfall on Tuesday, bringing both relief from the sweltering heat and disruption to daily life across several areas of the city.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), multiple parts of Karachi, including Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, North Nazimabad, Malir, Clifton, and Korangi, received moderate to heavy downpours accompanied by gusty winds. The showers, which began in the early morning hours, continued intermittently throughout the day.

While the rainfall lowered temperatures and provided some respite from the ongoing humid conditions, it also exposed the city’s chronic drainage and infrastructure challenges. Several main roads, including Sharae Faisal, University Road, and MA Jinnah Road, were inundated with rainwater, leading to traffic congestion and delays. Commuters reported being stranded for hours as vehicles moved bumper-to-bumper through waterlogged streets.

In low-lying neighborhoods, accumulated water entered homes and shops, adding to residents’ woes. Electricity supply was also disrupted in various localities as the downpour triggered faults and tripped feeders, plunging several areas into hours-long outages. K-Electric, the city’s power supplier, stated that ground teams were working to restore supply but cautioned citizens to maintain distance from electrical infrastructure during the rains.

Authorities said that emergency response teams had been deployed to clear main arteries and assist residents. However, civic bodies continued to face criticism from citizens, who voiced frustration over the lack of effective drainage systems despite repeated monsoon warnings every year.

Meanwhile, the PMD has forecast more rain and thunderstorms for Karachi in the coming 24 to 48 hours, warning of potential urban flooding in vulnerable areas. Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautionary measures
