The Pakistani rupee registered marginal gain against the US dollar in the inter-bank market on Thursday.

At close, the local currency settled at 279.11, a gain of Re0.01, against the greenback.

On Wednesday, the local unit closed at 279.12.

Globally, the US dollar advanced against ‌major currencies on Thursday, reversing two days of losses, after US President Donald Trump’s address on Iran shattered hopes for a possible ceasefire in the Middle East conflict that has rattled investors and roiled markets.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, climbed to a high of 99.925 after the speech. It last traded up 0.3% at 99.861.

The greenback has benefited from a rush to safe-haven assets since the conflict began in late February.

The euro stood at $1.1554 and the sterling fetched $1.3254 , both down roughly 0.3% versus the dollar after the speech to give up some recent gains.

Oil prices climbed to around $110 a barrel on Thursday after President Donald Trump said the US would continue attacks on Iran, stoking fears of prolonged disruptions to oil supply.

Brent crude futures were up $7.96, or 7.9%, to $109.12 per barrel at 1302 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up $12.48, or 12.5%, at $112.60 per barrel, touching their highest since March 9 and heading for their biggest absolute price rise since 2020.
