SPI-based inflation up slightly - Markets

ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index (SPI)-based inflation for the week ending April 2 increased by 1.01percent, mainly due to a rise in the prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which surged by 13.28percent, along with eggs and chicken, which recorded increases of 2.33percent and 2.23percent, respectively, according to weekly data released on Friday by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

Other items that witnessed an increase in prices included pulse mash, 1.74percent; mutton, 1.54percent; milk fresh, 0.63percent; curd, 0.60percent; georgette, 0.42 percent; shirting, 0.41percent; beef, 0.39percent; pulse masoor, 0.28percent and lawn printed, 0.10percent.

On the other hand, a decrease is observed in the prices of Tomatoes, 6.03 percent; garlic, 3.38percent; potatoes, 1.22percent;onions, 1.21percent; wheat flour,0.92percent; bananas, 0.50percent; mustard oil, 0.33percent; firewood, 0.19percent; and sugar, 0.15percent.

During the week, out of 51 items, the prices of 15 items, which constitute 29.41percent of the SPI basket, registered an increase, the prices of 9, which account for 17.65percent of the SPI basket, recorded a reduction, and the prices of 27 items, which account for 52.94percent of the SPI basket, remained stable.

The Year-on-Year (YoY) trend depicts an increase of 9.12percent owing to an increase in the prices of LPG, 53.69percent; diesel, 29.94percent; gas charges for Q1, 29.85percent; petrol, 26.17percent; wheat flour, 24.85percent; onions, 17.57percent; chilli powder, 15.20percent; mutton, 14percent; beef, 12.94percent, powdered milk, 10.11percent; rice basmati broken, 6.51percent; and gur, 5.69percent.

While on a YoY, a reduction is witnessed in the prices of the following items: potatoes, 49.65percent; pulse gram, 17.52percent; chicken, 16.08percent; salt powder, 12.55percent; sugar, 11.48percent; pulse masoor, 11.32percent; garlic, 10.39 percent; and eggs, 7.27percent.
