One of the PlayStation 5’s biggest advantages is that you can upgrade its storage using standard M.2 NVME solid-state drives (SSDs). That means you have way more options than Xbox gamers, who are stuck paying exorbitant premiums for proprietary storage expansion cards. Internal SSDs for PS5 are much cheaper byte-for-byte, especially with this Best Buy deal on a 1TB Western Digital.
The gaming-centric WD Black SN850 M.2 NVMe SSD (bundled with the mandatory heatsink) consistently tops lists of the best internal SSDs for PS5, and it’s now $90. This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for this specific kit, and it’s a great deal for PS5 storage in general. To put the value into perspective, Amazon has it for $96 as of writing, and the previous lowest price on a brand-new stick was hovered between $100 and $110 just a couple of months ago. All considerably cheaper than the original $240 MSRP at least.
The best deal on an internal SSD for PS5
This WD Black SN850 is a gaming-ready M.2 NVME SSD. Lower than ever, this PS5-ready model includes a heatsink, and it offers a sizable speed boost compared to the PS5’s internal storage, with read speeds up to 7,000MB/s.
This high-rated PS5 SSD holds dozens of games
The PlayStation 5 ships with 1TB of storage, but after the system takes its share, usable space falls to less than 900GB. And if you’ve ever tried downloading more than a dozen AAA games (many of which easily balloon beyond 100GB in size), you’ll know how stifling that can feel. Many gamers can get by with double the storage, which is exactly the jump you’ll take by installing the 1TB WD SN850.
With this PCIe Gen 4 SSD, you’re getting average read speeds of up to 7,000 megabytes-per-second and write speeds of 5,300 MB/s. Considering the PS5’s internal storage read/write speeds of 5,500 MB/s, games installed on the WD Black SN850 should actually load faster—perhaps not so much that it’ll add enough time back into your day for meaningful extracurricular activities, but any improvement is welcome.
This model ships with the requisite heatsink that’ll fit perfectly inside the PlayStation 5. Installation requires a little more tooling than most will be immediately comfortable with, but it’s relatively simple. WD has you covered with visual instructions here, and you’ll also find written guidelines in your PlayStation 5 manual.
