Whether it’s the ick factor or ethical concerns about harvesting, gastropods are not the only holy grail

From TikTok to YouTube, the ultimate goal of all multi-stepped skincare regimens is to achieve that coveted clear, dewy, and seemingly translucent complexion – popularly known as glass skin. A plethora of star ingredients have resurfaced, courtesy of long-held Korean and Japanese beauty rituals. Before we unpack these molecular heroes that can give you the lightbulb glow, we must address the elephant in the room – or rather, the snail in the serum. Snail mucin, extracted from the slime these little creatures produce, is praised for its ability to repair skin, boost hydration, and enhance texture.

Be it in essences, toners or night creams, even Reddit K-beauty threads have to say: Snail mucin is the holy grail in a long quest for perfect skin. While many swear by its hydrating and regenerative properties, let’s face it, the idea of slathering snail slime on your face is a bit, well, slimy. Even if setting aside the ick factor, the more ethically inclined ones will have a brow or two to raise about the harvesting process.

Mugwort

So if you’re one of those who’d prefer to skip the gastropod goo but still crave that radiant, lit-from-within glow, you’re in luck. Enter mugwort. Also known as artemisia, mugwort has been a staple in traditional Korean medicine for centuries. This magical herb is lauded for its anti-inflammatory and calming properties, making it perfect for sensitive skin types prone to redness and irritation. Rich in antioxidants, mugwort helps regulate sebum production and ensures your skin stays hydrated without becoming greasy, paving the way for that flawless, glassy finish.

Red bean

Mugwort is not the only star you can look for next time you go skincare hunting. Steadily becoming a new favourite is red bean or adzuki bean. Better known as a sweet treat in Asian desserts, this powerhouse ingredient is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that work wonders for the skin. Red bean extract exfoliates gently, removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover. This process is crucial for achieving glass skin, as it ensures your complexion remains smooth and even.

Ginseng

Of course, if you want an ingredient solely dedicated to bringing out that healthy glow, ginseng is the way to go. Often dubbed the “root of immortality,” ginseng is a prized ingredient in K-beauty for its rejuvenating properties. This ancient herb boosts circulation and oxygenation of the skin, resulting in a natural, healthy glow. Ginseng’s potent antioxidants fight free radicals, reducing signs of aging and enhancing skin’s resilience. It also has the ability to promote collagen production, improving skin firmness and texture. Incorporating ginseng into your routine not only helps you achieve glass skin but also ensures long-term skin health and vitality.

Centella

For those who have fallen victim to an unrelenting assault of actives, centella asiatica is a miracle worker for healing and soothing the skin. Famous for its wound-healing abilities, centella, commonly known as cica, accelerates the skin’s repair process, making it ideal for those with acne scars or other blemishes. It’s rich in amino acids, beta carotene, and fatty acids, all of which contribute to a more even skin tone and texture. Centella’s hydrating properties help to maintain the skin’s moisture barrier, keeping it plump and dewy – the very essence of glass skin.

Remember, every skin type reacts differently to ingredients, so it’s essential to patch test new products and introduce them gradually into your routine. Patience is key to seeing results, and always consult with a dermatologist if you have any concerns or persistent skin issues.
