Trump’s announcement comes at a time when the U.S. government is pressuring ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company in China, to sell the app’s U.S. operations. Lawmakers in Washington have raised concerns that TikTok could pose a national security risk by sharing user data with the Chinese government, something TikTok has repeatedly denied.
In April 2024, the U.S. Congress passed a law giving ByteDance until early 2025 to sell TikTok or face a nationwide ban in the United States. The company has challenged this law in court, calling it unconstitutional and harmful to American users and businesses.
During his presidency, Trump had also tried to force a sale of TikTok’s U.S. branch. At that time, companies like Oracle and Walmart were reportedly interested, but no deal went through. His latest statement has once again brought attention to the future of TikTok in the U.S.
