We Return to Tehran – Spain Reopens Embassy in Iranian Capital

Spain has officially reopened its embassy in Tehran, becoming the first Western country to restore full diplomatic operations in the Iranian capital following the recent US-Iran conflict.

The Spanish Foreign Ministry announced the move on April 9, 2026. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares confirmed that Ambassador Antonio Sanchez-Benedito Gaspar has been instructed to return to Tehran along with his diplomatic team and local staff. The embassy, which was closed in early March due to security concerns and military strikes, has now resumed normal operations.

In a post on X, the Spanish Embassy in Tehran wrote: “We return to Tehran.” The ambassador stated that the team is resuming work with a strong commitment to support peace efforts in the region from every possible front, including directly from Iran’s capital.

The decision comes shortly after a fragile two-week ceasefire was announced between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Spain believes that maintaining an active diplomatic presence in Tehran will help in promoting dialogue and long-term stability in the Middle East.

The reopening has drawn mixed reactions. While many see it as a positive diplomatic step, Israel has criticised the move. Spanish officials, however, insist that engagement through diplomacy is essential for peace.

The embassy in Tehran was temporarily evacuated on March 7, 2026, when regional tensions escalated.

Its return marks an important development as several European countries continue to monitor the situation before deciding on their own diplomatic presence.
